Cote d'Azure - OLDER

CÔTE D'AZUR

We live in interesting times. While some struggle to pay heating bills and keep clothes on their back, others are experiencing emotional melt-downs at the cost of private school fees under the pressure of low-performing stocks. The gap between the haves and the have-nots is massive.

Much of our lyric writing is observational and mostly with tongue firmly in cheek. We channel a couple that have challenges keeping up with the Jones. Times are tough, something's got to give...but not the annual holiday, Lord no.  Darling, it's the Côte d'Azur (aka The French Riviera) just put it on the card.

Released 27 April 2017

LYRICS

Feeling the pinch, got a new Maseratti
School fees, gym subs, dinner party
Whitening appointment, personal styling
Herbal ointment, keep smiling

Tightening the belt, got a lunch at Hestons
Nanny had to go, don't mention
Stocks are stalling, bank keeps calling
Put it on the card, so boring

Let's get away - summer sun, Dom Perignon, stiff upper lip it's been too long
Time to play - ride the debt and buy some more, have some fun in the Cote d'azur

Times are tough, need a tuck and a face lift
Missed a golf trip, hard shit
Marble top fail, cancelled the kitchen
Life's getting grimy, it's bitchin'

Keepin up Jones, Safron & Hugos
Pawning the silver, God knows
Eating al fresco, take out from Tesco
Savin the coupons, let's go

Let's get away - summer sun, Dom Perignon, stiff upper lip it's been too long
Time to play - ride the debt and buy some more, have some fun in the Cote d'azur

Squeeze is stifflin', future's frighten'
Time to face it, can't ignore it
We're drowning with the poor

Let's get away - summer sun, Dom Perignon
Time to play, escape it all in the Cote d'azur

Reality cuts a jagged edge
We lick our wounds and put it on red

Let's get away - summer sun, Dom Perignon, stiff upper lip it's been too long
Time to play - ride the debt and buy some more, have some fun in the Cote d'azur

Life Less Ordinary - OLDER

LIFE LESS ORDINARY

Revelations come at odd moments. Like a light switch that turns on revealing things for what they actually are, and you're left a little brain-numb that you couldn't see things so clearly before. Things are so very different they almost become an alien concept. LIFE LESS ORDINARY raises a glass to relationships, clear thinking and all the muddy bits in between.

Released 15 October 2016

LYRICS

Can't remember why I came here
Can't remember what you told me
Can't remember all the words you never said

Something 'bout a revelation
That you found a new persuation
To transform a life less ordinary

I don't need you, you're the hole in my head
I don't need you messing up my bed

Can't remember why I played here
Can't remember what you sold me
Can't remember all the bullshit pleasantries

Something 'bout a reputation
Hanging up a skew citation
It's all hazy, lazy, crazy, say's she (whoops-a-daisy)

I don't need you, you're the hole in my head
I don't need you messing up my bed

Walking down the street, spring in her step
Pocket full of hope on speed dial set
Winging into town, slug and a smoke
Gonna find herself the perfect bloke

I don't need you, you're the hole in my head
I don't need you messing up my bed

Banshee

Banshee by - OLDER

BANSHEE

In Irish folklore a Banshee is a female spirit whose wailing warns of a death in a house. Think: scream like a banshee, wail like a banshee, Siouxsie and the Banshees.  The wail is a message of pending death, grieving for the one who is about to die. To us, BANSHEE laments the death of the Kiwi dream, the quarter acre yard.

With urban development tearing down houses to make way for apartments, old bungalows that once stood in farmland are reduced to rumble. Not just the house, but the way of living - growing your own vegetables, kids playing in a tyre swing that sways beneath an old apple tree.

Released 5 October 2016

LYRICS

You're givin it that
Oyster Rockafellas and a wee Gewürzt
From where we're sat
Rome is slowly burning
We're the ones who's getting hurt

Banshee in a quarter arce yard
Screaming for a changing of the guard

You're moving your lips
Silver spoon and your tea leaf views
See the sinking ships?
Country overboard, so did you read it in the news?

Banshee in a quarter arce yard
Screaming for a changing of the guard

Heartless, fearless Humpties on a wall
10 to 1 we bet you're gonna fall

Banshee in a quarter arce yard
Screaming for a changing of the guard
Going, going, going, gone

Not Like Me - OLDER

NOT LIKE ME

Creatives think differently. This is a blessing and a curse as it means much of the time they go about their life being misunderstood or just considered a bit 'out there'. Like-minded others get us, most people don't.

It's a beautiful, frustrating and exceptionally short life.  We plan to wring out every second, as we have done for the seconds that precede this moment. Our lifetime (however long that may be) is a pimple on the arse of our planet. Yet, we are alive and have an opportunity to live it in the way we choose to -- something we remind ourselves daily.  NOT LIKE ME was written some 20 years ago but is as relevant today as it was then, if not more.

Released 4 September 2016

LYRICS

Not like me, Not like me

Nothing stands the test of time and
In the end what's yours is mine
Only those who run like me
Know the visions that I see

Few of us are made to find
Higher plains of any kind
Think beyond the garden wall and
See the stars begin to fall

Not like me, Not like me

Nothing built will last forever
Drift apart or come together
Nothing comes to those who wait
Tomorrow's chances are too late

Every day brings strength of mind
The years are leaving you behind
I won't rest until I'm whole
Body, mind, aching soul

Not like me, Not like me

Never sought for second best
Never found the time to rest
Never closed my eyes to change
Always looked to rearrange

Nothing matters more these days
I have tried the other ways
Drifters cloud the way you see
Maybe you are not like me

Not like me, Not like me, Not like me, Not like me

Takapuna Wives Club - OLDER

TAKAPUNA WIVES CLUB

Now this could have been about many suburbs in Auckland. Takapuna just had a nice ring to it.  For those people that we personally know in Takapuna, don't be offended if you don't think this song is about you (but it it relates, yes you've been part of the 'observation').

Rich-set kids raised by Stepford parents in a world that is far from most people's reality, reinforced by their neighbours and social groups. When you are 'in' you are in, until you're not of course.

Released 11 August 2016

LYRICS

Bella's got a new man, Prada and a fake tan
Blonde locks, botox, boob lift, detox
She almost has it all

Networks, cocaine, shopping with his millions
PT, liquid lunch, cleansing, brazilians
She seems so happy, darling

Credit card comes at a cost
Valium numbs the freedom lost
Trouble in the Takapuna Wives Club
Trouble in the Takapuna Wives Club

Club rules, tight lips, know your place, watch your hips
There's a script, no social slips
Only as good as your game

Don't ask, don't nag, spend it up, don't sag
Gotta keep on top to be a WAG
There's plenty waiting in line

Credit card comes at a cost
Valium numbs the freedom lost
Trouble in the Takapuna Wives Club
Trouble in the Takapuna Wives Club

People start talking, you'll find yourself walking
Social outcast, nothing to say
Minihaha it ain't that funny
When the tide comes in and washes you away

Credit card comes at a cost
Valium numbs the freedom lost
Trouble in the Takapuna Wives Club
Trouble in the Takapuna Wives Club

Remember you were free, money was your own
Friends you had were real, not a Stepford clone
Come now dry your eyes, reclaim your sense of self
Happiness is more than measured by your wealth

Trouble in the Takapuna Wives Club
Trouble in the Takapuna Wives Club

Don't know what it takes to make her happy
Too damn sad to leave her sugar daddy
Rich girl, poor choice, lost her own voice
Sold her soul to the Takapuna Wives Club

Moment In The Sun - OLDER

MOMENT IN THE SUN

Written as an instrumental dance/trance track some 20 years ago, MOMENT IN THE SUN has been reinvented thanks to the inspiration of Auckland traffic woes. The mind-numbing concept of being stuck in traffic can be appreciated anywhere in the world -  commuters spending more time in their cars than with their families, only to spend eight hours in a dreary office.

This is your time to live. This is the time when you're alive. This is your moment in the sun. Are you living?

Released 25 July 2016

LYRICS

This is our moment in the sun
This is the time that we're alive
This is us, living here, now
This is our moment in the sun

I'll tell you what it's like from Peckham to Manhatten
The world over
It's the same
Millions every morning stuck in a traffic jam
And this is my jam
Cheers

Heading to work, bloke cutting in
Fella in a boom box here, boom, boom, boom, nice
Look at her on the phone
What about him, still eating his breakfast
Nice piece of toast mate
Keep me entertained

Sun in my eyes, hardly moving
Stuck on the bridge, nice view
Good morning Rangitoto
Don't blow your top today
I might

And all I can think about is will I get a space to park when I get to work
How sad is that?

It's a new day
There's another way
Your moment's come
To step into the sun

This is our moment in the sun
This is the time that we're alive
This is us, living here, now
This is our moment in the sun

Morning boss, don't bother smiling
Cheers for the grunt
I had a lovely evening
What about yours?
Nah I don't really care either

Hello desk, here we are again
Has the cleaner been in?
No, yesterday's sandwiches
Nice
Instant coffee, instant boredom

OK, let's get into now
KPIs, RSI's, ROI's, crossed eyes
Whatever

All I can think about is lunch
And at lunchtime
All I can think about is going home
This is our moment in the sun

It's a new day
There's another way
Your moment's come
To step into the sun

It's Friday night
Nice girl
Couple of drinks
World's my oyster

It's a new day
There's another way
Your moment's come
To step into the sun

It's a new day
There's another way
Your moment's come
To step into the sun

Mavis and John - OLDER

MAVIS & JOHN

MAVIS & JOHN have been living parallel lives. It wasn't their intention. It seldom is. Their only common ground became the roof they lived in. How did it come to this? The truth is – the signs were always there, they just failed to look up.  Until 'that' bold conversation over a glass of wine, that is.

When love was not so old, love never was so bold to take the necessary measures to make a better life.

Released 19 April 2016

LYRICS

Mavis needed time to redefine the likelihood of a future
In her memory when she was free she understood her simple needs

John was never sure he need more than just a job and a good wife
In his memory when he was free he never needed company

When love was not so old, love never was so bold
To take the necessary measures to make a better life

Mavis made a point of getting out and grabbed a chance to see the world
In her heart she felt alive again she understood her simple needs

John tried hard to change his live around but pressure traps a man
In his heart he felt an emptiness, he never needed company

When love was not so old, love never was so bold
To take the necessary measures to make a better life

In the end they found the only choice across a glass of wine
Mavis said to John, I have to face some way a better life

John was primed to see the way it was, the facts were very clear
Mavis said goodbye to John, he felt a growing fear

When love was not so old, love never was so bold
To take the necessary measures to make a better life
She'll make a better life, she'll make a better life

Poor old Mavis, poor old John
Poor old Mavis, poor old John
Poor old Mavis, poor old John
Poor old Mavis

PERFECT

Nobody is perfect. We don't live in a perfect world. Yet, something intrinsically macabre in the human psyche strives to be just that. We rejoice in imperfections of the seamlessly faultless and darn right encourage the unmasking.

LYRICS

Roll up, roll up, it's the social fair
Count up the trophies, quif that hair
Leave out the spooks and the spivs don't care
Lay out your stall for the players there

Oh he's such a perfect boy
Oh she's such a perfect girl (whatever)

Daddy's so proud and mummy's got her hair done
Standing to attention for some weekend fun
Nameless, shameless, living in a fantasy
Naughty little lives in a model little family

Oh he's such a perfect boy
Oh she's such a perfect girl (whatever)

Look at your reflection, who do you think you see?
One plus one is sometimes free
Find a little courage to swing from the rafters
Leave all the crowd for happy ever-afters

Oh he's such a perfect boy
Oh she's such a perfect girl
Oh he's such a perfect boy
Oh she's such a perfect girl (whatever)

WASTED

A slow day that drags is literally hell on Earth. WASTED breath, wasted conversation, wasted daily drawl with low-to-no energy to recharge...and others sapping your battery down to critical levels. You know those days? Hopefully they are few and far between, but they exist.

Released 17 February 2016

LYRICS

Wasted in a beige world
No light to reflect
Montonous drawl drags one moment to the next

Ground hog day is every day (call that living?)
Humour and hope just slip away (gave up giving...a shit)

You think we're suited baby, wasted time
A little stupid maybe, wasted time

Waiting for a bolt of light
A miracle to reveal
Nothing will change, never did or will

Ground hog day is every day (call that living?)
Humour and hope just slip away (gave up giving...a shit)

You think we're suited baby, wasted time
A little stupid maybe, wasted time
You think we're suited baby, wasted time
A little stupid maybe, wasted time

Wasted your time, wasted my time
Wasted your time, wasted my time
Wasted your time, wasted my time
Wasted your time, wasted

Monarch - OLDER

MONARCH

The Monarch butterfly is a beautiful creation although lives for merely two to six weeks. It lives, it mates, it flies freely. A Monarch dies when they get 'old' just like people do. Life is short but they live like there is no tomorrow, gracefully with freedom. An ode to making the most of a short life MONARCH is a free-form style ballad duet featuring Julie's mum (aged 77).

Released 1 February 2016

LYRICS

My mother said:
Life is short, don't be afraid to follow your dreams, do it while you can
Never regret the things that you've done
Or go to your grave wishing "if only I had"

My mother said:
Don't waste a moment
It's a fine old world when you find the key
So spread your wings and fly above the rooftops

My mother said:
You can't change the world so change your OWN world
The only failure you can have is the failure to try
So hold on to true love and treasure it

My mother said:
Don't waste a moment
It's a fine old world when you find the key
So spread your wings and fly above the rooftops
...Where you don't waste a moment

Monarch in the garden in the setting sun
Life is nearly over when it's just begun
Didn't know how beautiful it was
But I do

My mother said:
You are braver than you think, stronger than you seem
Much smarter than you believe, so don't stop pedalling
Life's too short, way too short

Monarch in the garden in the setting sun
Life is nearly over when it's just begun
Didn't know how beautiful it was
But I do

My mother said:
Don't waste a moment, it's a fine old world when you find the key
So spread your wings and fly above the rooftops
Where you don't waste a moment
