Crown - OLDER

CROWN

Throughout the West people are losing faith in democracy. Whichever way votes are cast the fundamental issues of poverty in societies seem to never be resolved. Hundreds of millions of disenfranchised voters see the rich getting richer, corporates not paying their fair share of taxes and politicians of all persuasions promising much and delivering little.

Our children come into a world of uncertainty and are the first generation to be worse off than the previous by many economic measures. We have detached from the same old arguments and 'same old thinking' that leads to decline and stifles progress. This song is not a call to violence, but is a reflection of the self-evident reality that many yearn for a new way of governance. We hope the youth can unchain themselves from advertising, consumerism, slavery to money and the prejudice of dogma to create a better future. Big ideas, but things are changing - the old system is cracking.

LYRICS

Go, go, go, smash it all down
Challenge all the rules
Don't suffer fools who claim a crown
You, you, you, dreaming of it
Know your bones and dance your own way
Keep your faith and never sway
From who you are

Rising, from the depths of dark seas
Reaching for the surface
Ascending up to breathe
Watch us, break free, fly and soar high
Bright stars on the skyline
This is, this is our time to

Stay
True to yourself

Go, go, go, smash it all down
Challenge all the rules
Don't suffer fools who claim a crown
You, you, you, dreaming of it
Know your bones and dance your own way
Keep your faith and never sway
From who you are

We know the odds are stacked
The haters hate but we'll fight back
Our faith is strength to see us through
These battle lines we've drawn with you

We hold these reigns, this change, this wave, this movement, conquer kingdoms
Stand for future generations
Fight for choices, fight for freedom

Stay
True to yourself

Go, go, go, smash it all down
Challenge all the rules
Don't suffer fools who claim a crown
You, you, you, dreaming of it
Know your bones and dance your own way
Keep your faith and never sway
From who you are.

BLAH BLAH, BLAH BLAH

We've all worked with them - those idiot bosses and business-types who use endless phrases that don't actually mean anything but sound jolly impressive right? They are so relentless and pervasive that you can just string them together and feel inspired ... so we did. And we weren't.

Let's translate some ... 'With all due respect' means 'I'm telling you how it is going to be as my pay packet is bigger and I desperately need to justify it'. 'Let's get disruptive' in other words, let's do the same crap again and again until my idea fails miserably. 'Think outside the box' refers to the mental prison you find yourself in as the result of working with these types. They are giving it 'blue sky' and you are thinking of how to resign and live a real life. And when they say 'My door is open' you know they mean 'only if you agree' and of course you wish their window was open, 5 floors up and it was OK to push them out of it ...

LYRICS

Blah blah, blah blah, I love the sound of my voice
Talk for hours but its just a lot of noise
Think I make myself perfectly clear
Lights are on but there's no one here.

With all due respect, the fact of the matter is
Going forward, break down silos and touch bases
Let's get disruptive, push the envelope yeah
It's in the pipeline, let's take this offline.

Blah blah, blah blah, I love the sound of my voice
Talk for hours but its just a lot of noise
Think I make myself perfectly clear
Lights are on but there's no one here.

Run it up the flagpole, think outside the box
Raise the bar and get our ducks in a row
Synergise, my door is open
Blue-sky thinking, are you with me?

Blah blah, blah blah, I love the sound of my voice
Talk for hours but its just a lot of noise
Think I make myself perfectly clear
Lights are on but there's no one here.

I think I'm great, I've nailed it look at me
I've memorised the slides from one to ten and back again
I can draw and point and talk at the same time
With me on board, turn your water into wine!

Silence

How well do you know your friends and family? More to the point how well do they know you? In our experience hardly at all. The real 'us' is danced around in conversations that ask all the regular questions but none that actually matter, none that get to the heart of us. Our true selves is ignored.

It's OK, we are creatives so we are used to it. Creatives have thick skins, they need them. We celebrate life and have the kind of adventures few can imagine. Ours is a rich life full of stuff we share, do and feel between us.

But we know we are fortunate. Not everyone has someone in their lives who 'gets them'. Without each other we'd be lost. And there is the problem ... so many people are lost and so many people unknown, lonely in a crowd, internally at complete odds with their external appearances. This song is for them.

In NZ our driving standards are about as bad as it gets in the Western world. We are, on the whole shit drivers & our road deaths attest to it; statistically twice as bad as the UK and there are some idiots there too. Yet in NZ more people die through suicide a year than on our roads. People living in Silence. That's simply shocking.

Our society is polar, uncaring, cold and poisoned by endless advertising that is designed to make you want or need more. We are fed stereotypical visions of what makes a real man or woman which all are false. Our media is fake; how we are encouraged to see ourselves through it is fake. To survive this myriad of meaningless diatribe needs strength of character that is testing for the most stable of minds. We need to break the silence. We need to talk, screw what other people think, screw their judgements. Open up.

No more Silence.

LYRICS

What will you say,
As ashes blow away
And you file outside into the autumn air
He lived a simple life?
A garden and a wife?
And as the silence screams

You just stare
You see through me

Such simple words
Seems so absurd
Yet the price of love is more than you can bear
Your heart is caged in steel
You can't afford to feel
And as the silence screams

You just stare
You see through me

In your life you cast your shadow over me
Why won't you see?
Moments wasted on the hope of so much more
You see through me

In my life I've lived in shadows cast by yours
Fell between the cracks, ignored
I sing my song for you and open up my heart
You see through me

What will you write
With your hindsight
Did you take the time to learn enough to share?
What will you send
A stand in for a friend
And as the silence screams

You just stare
You see through me

TEN PERCENT

Organised religion has a lot to answer for. The suffering, misery, judgement of innocent people, taking of 10% of the poorest member's salaries and buying of private jets, the abuse of children ... the list is endless. This song is not about faith - each to their own and your relationship with your God is your own freedom and right. We are not atheists and understand faith. We just don't do the being judged and preached to thing, and in return we do our best to refrain ourselves. Life is too short not to be free to live it - and we do.

So, we're calling out what we see, what many people see, and partly why Western organised religion is in such decline.

LYRICS

When you hit the sack at night
Does your conscience bother you?
Does your overdaft of love
Drain the joy from what you do

Many years of tears, deceptions
Line the course you're set to take
All your wealth and shallow charms
Will be the last thing you forsake

We're open Sundays, come at 10 and take a pew

We got the hypocrites - we got the lowlifes
The dodgy dealers and cheating house wives
Ten percent deal - did we mention?
We can fast track your redemption

When your past affects your future
Do you file appeals to suit?
Is your his-tory a rewrite
Of the truth that's haunting you

Many moments mark the man
Some cuts can slice down to a soul
You can say it never happened
Just pretend you're in control

We're open Sundays, come at 10 and take a pew

We got the hypocrites - we got the lowlifes
The dodgy dealers and cheating house wives
Ten percent deal - did we mention?
We can fast track your redemption

Oh yeah, sure we're just as screwed up as you
You'll fit in fine as you do as we do.

We got the hypocrites - we got the lowlifes
The dodgy dealers and cheating house wives
Ten percent deal - did we mention?
We can fast track your redemption.

We got the pond scum - we got the freak shows
The judges sidekicks and sexual no-gos
Its a win-win - we're a great fit
We're the shovel you're the shit

TEXTILES

Western society is obsessed with near-naked people - tabloid newspapers, TV and magazines are falling over themselves to print titillating photos. But a real naked person - ooo no way too shocking. That would challenge the very fabric (excuse the pun) of social order! The indecency would outrage! But of course its a lot of uptight bollocks from repressed folks who have lost touch with nature and themselves.

Mark Twain once wrote something about clothes that sums up what we think:  “There is no power without clothes. It is the power that governs the human race. Strip its chiefs to the skin, and no State could be governed; naked officials could exercise no authority; they would look (and be) like everybody else–commonplace, inconsequential.” So our wee song is about a simple man (could be any non-gender specific lovely person) who really doesn't give a toss. And there are lots of them out there.

LYRICS

Comes alive, doesn't say a lot
Head high, towel in hand
Doesn't dress for tea, no need to pack a lot
Not defined by tidy whitey lines
Ohhh

Likes the lifestyle, without textile
Don't matter if the grass is overgrown
Ain't no dark horse, runs his own course
Likes to flutter in the breeze
More D's!

Mind is free, a book without a cover
Lost his label, many tans ago
Spitting chicken, sensei in the kitchen
Dojo rules, everybody knows
Ohhhhh

Likes the lifestyle, without textile
Don't matter if the grass is overgrown
Ain't no dark horse, runs his own course
Likes to flutter in the breeze
More D's!

Keep blinkered views, in suburban mews
Textiled sermons, yesterday's news
He's heard it all before, really doesn't care
Open your eyes, imagine you're there!

Likes the lifestyle, without textile
Don't matter if the grass is overgrown
Ain't no dark horse, runs his own course
Likes to flutter in the breeze
More D's!

SANCTUARY

So you reach that point where you just can't abide most people's prejudices seething through their opinions - they are absolutely everywhere. Politicians, TV news reporters, columnists, radio hosts, work colleagues, friends, the list is endless. Everyone is trying to either fix an issue using tired old thinking or ramming their values down your throat with the authority of 'public opinion'. Politicians in particular pander to the vote and lecture us like patronising school teachers. They know what's best for the majority, none of whom actually really exist as individuals. But public opinion is a well honed thing and seeks to destroy through pack-mentality anyone who thinks differently. We don't fit in. We blend in. There is a difference. We don't subscribe to what we are supposed to do and think. We have found sanctuary. It's out there if you know where to look. Sometimes it's right in front of you.

LYRICS

Too many voices shouting from the left and right
They breed oppression block the truth snub out the light
My axe is blunt from waging war at every turn
You build your pyres stack 'em high I'll watch 'em burn

Take a moment, breathe the air in
Feel your lungs charged with freedom
Take a sight line, mark the target
Squeeze the trigger and let it, let it

Let it rise, let it soar
Your spirit won't be crushed any more
Over land, over sea
Come to us, come to find your sanctuary

Your city's choking on its self-indulgent bile
Cesspit of fascists marching paradigms of style
Indignant outrage over things you can't control
Your freedom licenced you are living on parole

Take a moment, breathe the air in
Feel your lungs charged with freedom
Take a sight line, mark the target
Squeeze the trigger and let it, let it

Let it rise, let it soar
Your spirit won't be crushed any more
Over land, over sea
Come to us, come to find your sanctuary

In this place we leave their prejudice behind
Free your body, free your soul and own your mind

Let it rise, let it soar
Your spirit won't be crushed any more
Over land, over sea
Come to us, come to find your sanctuary.

VANILLA

Album fillers - or interludes as they are known in fancy circles - we love them! Sometimes they are the highlights of an album - between tracks, or hidden a couple of minutes after the last song has finished. This is the first of many we intend to write - Vanilla - a bit over produced perhaps (it's really hard not to!) but short and sweet all the same. No one does vanilla in this exciting world, right?

Released 13 September 2017

LYRICS

Give me chocolate, raspberry sorbet - hey
Give me sprinkles, crunchy praline - hmm
But where I draw the line though
Where people queue and flock go
I just don't do vanilla

Waffle cone. the shape don't matter - no
On a stick, or laid on a platter - hmm
Dress it up any way you choose
I got the bruise to prove it
I just don't do vanilla

Lips go numb, brain freeze
Sticky fingers, wobbly knees
Change the menu please

I just don't do vanilla

AMBIVERT

Somewhere on the spectrum between an introvert and and extrovert lays the ambivert. This is where we, OLDER live. We are happy to engage madly in deep and meaningful conversation with anyone about anything. Just not small talk. One can't do that for more than a few minutes before it actually becomes painful. Seriously.

It's a perception though, isn't it.  What may be portrayed as 'anti social' behaviour, a term overused and bandied around the office, may just be an ambivert withdrawing from the mundane boredom of the people around them -- plenty of interesting things to say and do, just not to them.

Released 26 June 2017

LYRICS

Put her in a box with a bow on top
Sunny disposition, doesn't say a lot
Keeps her head down, doesn't make a fuss
Works very hard, not one of us
But where her mind goes
Nobody asks, nobody knows
She's such a strange one

She's antisocial, she don't fit in
A twisted enigma with a Cheshire grin

Tittle tattle chat over morning tea
Gets a little bored with the company
Stifles a yawn, gets a blank stare
She'd give her right arm not to be there
But where her mind goes
Nobody asks, nobody knows
She's such a strange one

She's antisocial, she don't fit in
A twisted enigma with a Cheshire grin

Oh their mundane world is shaken to the core
She's riding in the cart, apples on the floor

She's antisocial, she don't fit in
A twisted enigma with a Cheshire grin

Come Monday morning just gone 9,
ASBO smile, quite benign
Best not try to empathise
Keep it stuum, divert your eyes
Leave the crazy well alone,
Count the hours 'til she goes home
But maybe she's watching you,
Watching her, watching you

But where her mind goes
Nobody asks, nobody knows
She's such a strange one

She's antisocial, she don't fit in
A twisted enigma with a Cheshire grin

1984 - OLDER

1984

1984 is a George Orwell classic. Written in 1949 it writes about a superstate in a perpetual war, government surveillance and public manipulation. One of the many persecuted crimes is individualism and independent thinking -- aka 'thoughtcrime' and enforced by the Thought Police.

Fast-track to 2017, we have the internet and bless, Facebook. Once considered a channel for freedom of speech and sharing holiday snaps with loved-ones, has quickly revealed as a media not interested in the good of others, but interested solely in power. Personal opinion is managed and AI marks each post by 'relevance scores' and dishes up to only those likely to engage, if not banned for not conforming.

Friends are whomever you want the to be, but seldom friends. Lives are augmented, independent thinking is discouraged, news stories are forgeries and falsifications. Cat videos and memes reign supreme. To blend in, do not look up from your phone.

LYRICS

I'm the millions sharing silence on the bus
No human contact, no need for fuss

Send a request to be my friend, I know we've never met
The real world scares me, I'm not ready for it yet

Facebook friends I'm up tonight,
I'm on show, gimme a like
My esteem grows on a share, gimme a love
Show that you care

I'm the blank face that you never look at twice
An ice cold aura, a silence vice

Send a request to be my friend, I know we've never met
The real world scares me, I'm not ready for it yet

Facebook friends I'm up tonight,
I'm on show, gimme a like
My esteem grows on a share, gimme a love
Show that you care

Yeah I know I could switch off my phone
But I bore myself when I'm alone

Facebook friends I'm up tonight,
I'm on show, gimme a like
My esteem grows on a share, gimme a love
Gimme a love, gimme a love, gimme a love, gimme a love

I'm the millions sharing silence on the bus
No human contact, no need for fuss

CÔTE D'AZUR

We live in interesting times. While some struggle to pay heating bills and keep clothes on their back, others are experiencing emotional melt-downs at the cost of private school fees under the pressure of low-performing stocks. The gap between the haves and the have-nots is massive.

Much of our lyric writing is observational and mostly with tongue firmly in cheek. We channel a couple that have challenges keeping up with the Jones. Times are tough, something's got to give...but not the annual holiday, Lord no.  Darling, it's the Côte d'Azur (aka The French Riviera) just put it on the card.

Released 27 April 2017

LYRICS

Feeling the pinch, got a new Maseratti
School fees, gym subs, dinner party
Whitening appointment, personal styling
Herbal ointment, keep smiling

Tightening the belt, got a lunch at Hestons
Nanny had to go, don't mention
Stocks are stalling, bank keeps calling
Put it on the card, so boring

Let's get away - summer sun, Dom Perignon, stiff upper lip it's been too long
Time to play - ride the debt and buy some more, have some fun in the Cote d'azur

Times are tough, need a tuck and a face lift
Missed a golf trip, hard shit
Marble top fail, cancelled the kitchen
Life's getting grimy, it's bitchin'

Keepin up Jones, Safron & Hugos
Pawning the silver, God knows
Eating al fresco, take out from Tesco
Savin the coupons, let's go

Let's get away - summer sun, Dom Perignon, stiff upper lip it's been too long
Time to play - ride the debt and buy some more, have some fun in the Cote d'azur

Squeeze is stifflin', future's frighten'
Time to face it, can't ignore it
We're drowning with the poor

Let's get away - summer sun, Dom Perignon
Time to play, escape it all in the Cote d'azur

Reality cuts a jagged edge
We lick our wounds and put it on red

Let's get away - summer sun, Dom Perignon, stiff upper lip it's been too long
Time to play - ride the debt and buy some more, have some fun in the Cote d'azur
